Welcome to Over the Road, Whaley Bridge Uniting Church’s charity shop. We have been here, in this very same shop, for over 35 years.

2018 saw huge changes for us, with a modernisation programme which turned the very cold, very old and tired butchers tiled walls and floors of the shop into a bright, warm and inviting place to spend lovely browsing time.

This all happened during what has been the most challenging couple of years for us all. Firstly with the sudden closure from the dam threat and then three closures due to Covid.

But we are still here, thanks to an on-going relationship with our customers through our new weekly Facebook page. Since it’s introduction we have had a huge number of online sales and increased our membership to over 300 members and rising.

Wonderful news in such sad and bewildering times.

Recycling policy

We are committed to recycling absolutely everything in the shop. Any unsold household items are passed to a children’s charity and our unsold clothing goes to a variety of places.

Warm coats go to the homeless, new baby things to very young or abused mothers in the maternity ward at St. Mary’s.

Our best unsold clothes are sent to aid the work of the Air Ambulance.  All other clothing is sent to a distribution area for sending to 3rd world countries or for recycling.

We have been able to offer support to abused men and women who have needed help with household and personal items as well as provide Christmas presents for a family at very short notice.

We have recently established links with  Music Magpie which will allows us to offer more opportunities to the whole of the community - to recycle, using our shop as the collecting point.

Onwards and upwards, so watch this space!

 IMPORTANT INFORMATION

ALL our profits are given away to local and national charities and to aid WBUC in their work in the community. We have a list in the shop of the several charities we support each year.

Please note the list of charities will vary annually.

We have a dedicated team of volunteers that includes shop and Financial Managers, a management team and we are governed by Trustees. We are an ethically run shop with an emphasis on caring. As a church-based enterprise, we know how important it is for our customers to have a place where they can call in for a chat and not necessarily make a purchase.  We support the elderly, those with dementia, the lonely, bereaved, those with mental health issues. We offer support and listen to both them and their carers. We are the corner shop of the old days where people can drop in and feel wanted. You might come in as a customer but you will leave as a friend.

Chapel-en-le-Frith are hoping to open their new charity shop in the near future.  More details will be posted as soon as we have them confirmed.
